What to expect:
This is perhaps the most popular route and is often mentioned the Mekong river cruise which either start in Saigon (Vietnam), Phnom Penh (Cambodia) or Siem Reap (Cambodia). Typical cruise ships are bigger and more comfortable. The cruise tours focus on the history and culture of Vietnam and Cambodia. Seven-night cruises include Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam and the attraction-rich Phnom Penh city and the celebrated Angkor Wat ruins in Cambodia. Shorter trips are offered for the legs from Saigon to Phnom Penh, Phnom Penh to Siem Reap or vice versa.

The Mekong River can be low during the January/February to May/June dry season, so those traveling during those months will be using a coach to see some of the sights, depending on the size and draft of the ship. The Tonle Sap lake in Cambodia, which ships must navigate to reach Siem Reap, is often not navigable from November to August due to extremely low water.
